Smilow Cancer Hospital
Thoracic Surgery Goes Robotic Dr. Anthony Kim is performing robotic thoracic lobectomies at Smilow Cancer Hospital. Dr. Kim is currently using this technology to perform lobectomies for the treatment of lung cancer. He is the only surgeon in Connecticut actively performing the procedure and has one of the largest experiences with robotic lung operations in the state. Yale-New Haven Hospital is the leader in Connecticut using robotic technology, having performed over 1,200 robotic procedures since 2008 across multiple specialties including gynecology, urology, thoracic oncology, head and neck cancer, general surgery, and cardiac surgery. Smilow Cancer Hospital has the da Vinci Si, the most advanced robotic platform available. New Smoking Cessation Program Opens at Smilow Smilow Cancer Hospital is now offering a quit smoking program. Developed by Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, Dr. Benjamin Toll, the program aims to help patients quit by combining counseling and drug treatment. The cessation program is offered to all patients being treated at Smilow, for specific cancers. The Smoking Cessation Service at Smilow encourages patients to quit by stressing the benefits quitting will have on their health and their treatment, not by pointing out the harm smoking can cause. The program utilizes the appropriate treatment based on each patient's individual situation and history with smoking.
To find out more information about the service, please contact Dr. Benjamin Toll or Helena Chmielowicz, APRN at (203) 688-1378. |

Funding and Award OpportunitiesV Foundation Translational Research Grant The Translational Grant from the V Foundation for Cancer Research provides funding for novel approaches to the prevention, detection, and treatment of human cancer that requires collaboration of investigators from the lab and the clinic. The award totals $600,000 paid in $200,000 installments over a three-year period, beginning in October 2011. Ten percent of the grant annually may be used to offset the indirect costs of the project.
Applications for this award must have a minimum of two scientists from the same facility and the team must possess basic and clinical research expertise. The research project must bring together pre-clinical and clinical investigators, and may not be currently funded by other mechanisms external to the Yale Cancer Center. The competition is only open to YCC Members, and one application from the Center can be submitted.
If you are interested in applying for the award, please send a one-page project summary (including specific aims) with your CV to Roy Herbst no later than Friday, May 6. Biostatistical Support - YCAS The Yale Center for Analytical Sciences (YCAS) brings together existing academic strengths in biostatistics, epidemiology, health economics, and health services research at the Yale School of Public Health and collaborative staff to provide expertise for the design, conduct and analysis of health and health care studies, methodological development and education and training to Yale and the extended research community. Yale Cancer Center members have access to the support of YCAS through a collaborative agreement to create a biostatistical shared resource. The Key Functions of the Biostatistics Shared Resource are to: - Assist YCC investigators in the design, conduct and analysis of clinical trials, genomic and proteomic studies as well as population, epidemiologic and prevention studies of cancer.
- Provide review and evaluation of statistical design of studies for the Protocol Review Committee and monitoring of studies for QUACS.
- Provide statistical collaboration for YCC investigators on grant/protocol preparation - statistical design, power and sample size considerations, and analytic and monitoring plans.
- Assist YCC investigators with manuscript preparation and review.
YCAS research design clinics are held every Wednesday from 12 to 2 PM in Room 555 of 300 George Street. Clinics are free of charge. To schedule an appointment, please contact YCAS
