Lung Cancer Program Exceeds Accrual Expectations One of my main priorities for 2011 is to increase efficiency in our clinical research operations and to expand the number of patient accruals to clinical trials. The Lung Cancer Program recently completed a successful audit process and continues to exceed our accrual expectations each month. They are to be commended for their extraordinary efforts! Led by Scott Gettinger, MD, the research team includes two research nurses, Elin Rowen, RN and Emily Duffield, RN; a project manager, BrieAnna Hamel; a clinical trial assistant, Christina Lakomski; and a data manager, Hong Xu. Over the last three months the team has placed 15 patients on clinical trials for lung cancer treatment.
New Flow Cytometer Yale Cancer Center, with the support of a Yale Class of 1961 gift, has ordered a new Flow Cytometer for the Flow Cytometry Shared Resource/Cell Sorter Core Facility, directed by Dr. Mark Shlomchik. The new 8-color machine is manufactured by Stratedigm and will expand the Resource's capacity to process samples in an efficient manner with more sensitive and reliable digital analysis and easier software and operation. It will replace a FACScalibur "legacy" instrument that is nearly 15 years old and could only detect four colors.

Hope, Not Fear Conference a Success Yale Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital held our annual Hope, Not Fear conference on breast cancer earlier this week on Yale's West Campus. The event was a wonderful success, with over 150 people attending for the morning's events. We appreciate the time and efforts of the faculty presenters, moderators, and volunteers for their time.
A special thank you to Shirley Pinette for coordinating all of the details of the day. |

Funding and Award Opportunities
Susan G. Komen for the Cure Promise Grant Promise Grants are intended to support collaborative, multi-disciplinary research programs that integrate a set of highly synergistic clinical and/or laboratory based research projects to address a critical issue or question in breast cancer research. Programs funded through this grant mechanism are expected to achieve results that would not otherwise be attainable by investigators working independently and should have significant potential to reduce breast cancer incidence and/or mortality within the decade. Promise Grant funding will support two or three highly collaborative principal investigators and a multidisciplinary investigative team. The investigative team should utilize their combined laboratory, clinical and/or public health expertise to effectively address the proposed research question(s). Promise Grant teams are expected to include breast cancer consumer advocates as active and integrated members of the research program to maximize the potential for translation of the research findings into outcomes that will impact patient care. While initiation of a clinical trial during the grant term is not required, it is encouraged. However, research programs must include testing of human samples and/or specimens at some point during the grant term. Pre-application Deadline: August 1, 2011 Learn More >> (PDF)
