Biography

  • Practice Location: York Street Campus
  • Residency: University of California - Los Angeles
  • Fellowship: Urologic Oncology, National Cancer Institute
  • Clinical Interests: Urologic oncology, open and robotic surgery, systemic therapy for kidney cancer, percutaneous kidney tumor biopsy/cryoablation, limiting over-treatment of non-aggressive urologic cancers with active surveillance strategies, integration of genetic testing to cancer care

Dr. Shuch is a graduate of the University of Michigan and received his MD from New York University before completing his urology residency and surgery internship at the University of California - Los Angeles where he was an integral part of the UCLA Kidney Cancer Program. After residency, he completed a three-year urologic oncology fellowship at the National Cancer Institute focused on clinical trials, drug development, and the comprehensive management of patients with kidney cancer. He is a member of two oncology clinical trials groups, one through the Society of Urologic Oncology and the other through SWOG.

Dr. Shuch's clinical interest is in the multidisciplinary management of sporadic and hereditary forms of kidney cancer. He has developed a clinical program at Yale to evaluate patients with possible genetic causes of kidney cancer (including young patients with kidney cancer, those with bilateral/multifocal tumor, or a strong family history of kidney cancer). In addition, he will be working with Drs. Harriet Kluger and Mario Sznol on the development of a multidisciplinary kidney cancer program and the expansion of the Yale kidney cancer clinical trial portfolio. These trials range from all stages of disease including those with localized, small tumors to patients with advanced metastatic disease. Additionally he has a small research laboratory focused on kidney cancer and runs the urologic oncology cancer research bank, where all tissue gets stored for future research within the Yale Cancer Center.
