Romana Petrucelli is a Clinical Secretary in the Department of Urology, where she supports Dr. John Colberg, Associate Professor of Urology, and Dr. Peter Schulam, Professor of Urology. Her main role is to gather information from patients and make sure they have everything that is needed before their appointment. This includes obtaining all the necessary forms and signatures needed before a patient undergoes surgery.
Although she has been in her current position for only a year, Romana has been focused on caring for patients for over 10 years. Lately she has chosen to focus in urology, and enjoys her interactions with patients and physicians. She answers any questions or concerns a patient may have, and figures out what they need to make the process go smoothly once they arrive.
"It feels good to know that I have made a difference for someone who is scared or nervous going into treatment. It may be a routine procedure, but for them it is a major surgery. I try to put their mind at ease and help them realize that they are going to come out better than they went in," said Romana. Romana believes that whether it is a 60 second phone call or a reassuring word, something small can mean a lot to a patient and everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and kindness.
Debra Reynolds, Supervisor of Clinical Operations in the Multispecialty Care Center at Smilow Cancer Hospital, commented, "Romana's dedication, compassion and hard work shows on a daily basis. The Providers, staff and patients are very lucky to have her as part of the Smilow Team."
