The SRNT Board of Directors is pleased to offer SRNT’s first virtual half-day conference. This is a new venture for SRNT that meets the Board’s goal of launching projects that will benefit the membership. We envision virtual conferences that are timely, comprehensive, and interactive, on scientific topics of that are of current import and need. These virtual conferences will not only support SRNT’s primary goal of dissemination of evidence-based tobacco and nicotine science, but also provide a new source of revenue to support and strengthen the Society’s future financial position.

Since the advent of the global COVID-19 pandemic, research has been rapidly instigated to understand the risk and protective factors for infection, severity of disease, and impact on a wide range of social and behavioral domains. SRNT’s first virtual half-day conference focuses on the potential role of tobacco and nicotine in this global pandemic. Presentations will address the science of tobacco as a risk factor for respiratory disease and the role of nicotine and tobacco as either increasing or decreasing severity of COVID-19 symptoms, and the impact of the pandemic on tobacco use behaviors and perceptions.

The speakers will answer questions and a separate discussion panel will provide participants ample opportunity for interaction. In addition to an overview of current scientific findings, panelists will address gaps in the science and priority research questions. The SRNT Board hopes that this half-day conference serves as a model for respectful discourse about this topic given that the science and data are continuing to evolve.
