Evolution of the Lynch Syndrome

Evolution of the Lynch Syndrome

 .
  • 00:00So it really has evolved
  • 00:02tremendously from 10 years ago or so.
  • 00:05We're having a lynching and diagnosis,
  • 00:07and the particular gene that was
  • 00:09causing it made little difference to us,
  • 00:12and we all thought that that they
  • 00:14all had a very high risk of cancer.
  • 00:17Under four, they really at,
  • 00:19we counseled in a very similar way too.
  • 00:22Now that we've learned so much more
  • 00:25about the specific risks by gene that
  • 00:28actually we are starting to propose not.
  • 00:30So no longer talk about Lynch
  • 00:33syndrome in general,
  • 00:34but seeing MLH 1 Lynch syndrome and
  • 00:36message to Lynch intimacy because
  • 00:38the what it means having one mutation
  • 00:41versus another is very different,
  • 00:43and that's what we're trying
  • 00:45to tell our patients,
  • 00:47and that's why little by little
  • 00:49we're tailoring more surveillance
  • 00:50and recommendations to the
  • 00:52run specific mutations.
  • 00:53That is really more of a
  • 00:55personalized approach.
  • 00:56And as we learn more,
  • 00:58we're really developing these these.
  • 01:00Uh, Survaillance recommendations more
  • 01:02tailored to those specific genes,
  • 01:04and we'll hear more.
  • 01:05And as we learn more about
  • 01:07modifiers and other things,
  • 01:09probably will be be able to narrow
  • 01:12the choices for every single person,
  • 01:14even more.
  • 01:15So again,
  • 01:16what we were saying several years ago
  • 01:18based on the knowledge at that time,
  • 01:21mass has changed quite a
  • 01:23bit now, and I'm very sure
  • 01:25than a few years it's going to be
  • 01:28very different from all we're saying.
  • 01:31Today, so I think that emphasizes the
  • 01:33importance of keeping in touch with
  • 01:35cancer genetics programs for patients,
  • 01:37because what we told them,
  • 01:39what they may change.
  • 01:40It's extremely likely it's
  • 01:42going to change in the future,
  • 01:44and so they can benefit from
  • 01:46more updated information.
