May 25, 2021
  • 00:00Hi, my name is Andrew saying I am radiation
  • 00:03colleges said Yelan I treat mostly GI
  • 00:06patients and breast cancer patients.
  • 00:08I chose to become a radiation oncologist
  • 00:11because it represents a cutting edge
  • 00:13in cancer treatment were able to use
  • 00:15photon electron and proton particles
  • 00:18to deliver patient specific millimeter
  • 00:20accurate radiation treatments.
  • 00:21Patients are just calm as they are
  • 00:24preferably with the family member.
  • 00:26I think a lot of times having
  • 00:28a diagnosis of cancer.
  • 00:30Even though a lot of cancers like
  • 00:33early stage breast cancer can
  • 00:34be cured 9095% of the time,
  • 00:36that diagnosis is traumatizing,
  • 00:38it's very difficult.
  • 00:38And sometimes when we present
  • 00:40a lot of information,
  • 00:41it's difficult for one person to be
  • 00:44able to absorb it all at one time.
  • 00:460 Coming with one family member,
  • 00:48I know there's a lot of
  • 00:50restrictions nowadays with COVID,
  • 00:52so if that's not possible,
  • 00:53we do a lot of Tele health visits and
  • 00:56being on a zoom meeting with me with
  • 00:58some of your family members so that
  • 01:01you guys can all process it together.
  • 01:03I think it's invaluable.
  • 01:05I think patients should be empowered
  • 01:08with every resource available to them.
  • 01:10An Internet,
  • 01:11of course,
  • 01:12can be confusing because with
  • 01:14any cancer diagnosis there,
  • 01:16sometimes the Internet poses
  • 01:17more questions than answers,
  • 01:19but I think that if patients come
  • 01:22well prepared with their questions
  • 01:24and with their own research,
  • 01:26we can more easily work through
  • 01:28them and more easily tackle.
  • 01:31You know these questions 1 by 1.
  • 01:34Our radiation oncology team
  • 01:36consists of the patient,
  • 01:37the center, and we are a big team
  • 01:40to support them with physicians,
  • 01:43nurses, technicians, physicists,
  • 01:44dosimetrists.
  • 01:45I'm hoping I'm not missing anyone
  • 01:48but we all have our own role in
  • 01:50explaining and providing the best
  • 01:52radiation care for the patient.
  • 01:54And of course with that team
  • 01:57is not only the patient but
  • 01:59also their family members too.
