- 00:00Sarcoma is a rare type of cancer.
- 00:05Now when I say rare, we see probably
- 00:092,000,000 new cancers a year in
- 00:11this country and out of those
- 00:15there's only about 15,000 sarcomas.
- 00:23Sarcomas can occur anywhere in the body.
- 00:26They arise from what we call mesenchyme.
- 00:29All tissue and that means bone,
- 00:32muscle, tendon fat, connective tissue,
- 00:35so they really can occur almost anywhere,
- 00:38and because of this it's hard to say
- 00:41what a general symptom or sign is,
- 00:45but generally they present
- 00:47with pain or a lump.
- 00:55But there are over 50 different
- 00:57subtypes of sarcomas,
- 00:59and some of these are more
- 01:02common in different populations.
- 01:04So for instance,
- 01:05there's one called osteosarcoma.
- 01:07This occurs in young children that
- 01:10can also occur in older adults if they
- 01:14have something called Paget's disease.
- 01:17Another type called Rhabdomyosarcoma
- 01:19is also generally a pediatric disease,
- 01:23but can occur in younger adults as well.
- 01:28And finally,
- 01:29some of the soft tissue sarcomas is
- 01:32mainly a disease of older adults.
- 01:40One of the. Problems
- 01:42with being a rare disease.
- 01:45As many community physicians may not
- 01:47have heard of the disease itself,
- 01:50so even oncologists may not see many
- 01:53sarcomas in their lifetime unless
- 01:55they specialize in treating them.
- 01:58So it's always a good idea to go to a
- 02:01specialist center which treat sarcomas,
- 02:04such as Yale, just so that you
- 02:07make sure that you're getting the
- 02:10treatment that's recommended.
- 02:12By most of the experts.
