Gabriel Cartagena, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry, has been appointed clinical director of the Yale Psycho-Oncology Program (YPOP).
Cartagena has provided individual and group outpatient psychotherapy at Smilow Cancer Hospital since 2023. He earned his PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Florida, with a focus in health psychology, and completed both his predoctoral fellowship at Yale School of Medicine and his postdoctoral residency at VA Connecticut, specializing in behavioral medicine.
Cartagena specializes in bilingual (English/Spanish), culturally responsive psychotherapy for cancer survivors, and brings expertise in managing chronic illness, medical consultation, and interdisciplinary education.
In his new role as clinical director, Cartagena will oversee outpatient psychotherapeutic care, lead the development and implementation of clinical triage processes and workflows, and drive strategic planning initiatives for YPOP.
