Interventional Oncology meets Immuno-Oncology - the White Paper

April 26, 2019

Interventional Oncologists (IO) are specialized radiologists that treat different types of cancer using advanced minimally invasive, image-guided techniques. The goal of such therapies is to preserve quality of life particularly in patients with advanced disease stages. In November 2016, the Society of Interventional Oncology formally commissioned a white paper to explore the synergies between IO and immuno-oncology. A panel of 18 international experts in interventional oncology and immuno-oncology, among them Dr Julius Chapiro from Yale, were tasked with identifying essential elements of the emerging field of immuno-oncology for interventional oncologists with the goal of issuing a consensus document. The white paper, published this month in the journal "Radiology" provides a concise report on the current state of the synergies that exist between interventional oncology and immuno-oncology (IO meets IO), as well as the future directions of these fields.
