Statement concerning recall of Allergan breast implants following cancer link

July 25, 2019

At the request of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, textured breast implants made by Allergan are being recalled. The implants have been linked to a rare cancer called Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma. Dr. Tomer Avraham, a board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in breast reconstruction at Smilow Cancer Hospital, said this is an important step to protect women, but that women with these implants should not panic. He says anyone with safety concerns should contact their plastic surgeon. In the meantime, Dr. Avraham advises women to stay alert to signs and symptoms like pain, redness or swelling, asymmetry, or a new lump around the breast area.
