Vice Admiral Vivek H. Murthy, MD ‘03, MBA ‘03, United States Surgeon General, Department of Health, and Human Services, will speak at Medical Grand Rounds presented by Yale School of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, on Friday, September 9, 2022.
The 24th Annual Samuel O. Thier Lecture in Healthcare Policy, “A conversation with the Surgeon General of the United States,” will be moderated by Marcella Nunez-Smith, MD, MHS ‘06, associate dean for health equity research and C.N.H. Long Professor of Internal Medicine (general medicine), of epidemiology (chronic disease) and of public health (social and behavioral sciences).
Nancy J. Brown, MD, Jean and David W. Wallace Dean of the Yale School of Medicine and C.N.H. Long Professor of Internal Medicine, will introduce Murthy and Nunez-Smith, who will speak for 30 minutes, leaving time for questions.
The event will be from 9 - 10 am at Harkness Auditorium at Yale School of Medicine, as well as on Zoom.
Murthy was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in March 2021 to serve as the 21st Surgeon General of the United States. As the nation's doctor, the Surgeon General's mission is to help lay the foundation for a healthier country, relying on the best scientific information available to provide clear, consistent, and equitable guidance and resources for the public.
As Vice Admiral of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, Murthy commands a uniformed service of over 6,000 dedicated public health officers, serving the most underserved and vulnerable populations domestically and abroad.
Murthy is focused on drawing attention to and working across government to address a number of critical public health issues, including the growing proliferation of health misinformation, the ongoing youth mental health crisis, well-being and burnout in the health worker community, and social isolation and loneliness. Additionally, he serves as a key advisor to President Joseph Biden's White House COVID-19 Task Force.
The Samuel O. Thier Lecture in Healthcare Policy honors the life and career of Samuel O. Thier, MD, chair of medicine at Yale School of Medicine from 1975-1985.
