Smilow Cancer Hospital Opens
This past week brought hope and excitement for cancer care at Yale as we celebrated the opening of Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven. The festivities began with the employee celebration on Tuesday afternoon. I was overwhelmed with the response and happy to share the day with the employees of YNHH and YSM. Almost 4,000 people stopped by for a first look at the new hospital and to share the excitement with us.
Wednesday's official dedication was a memorable day in the history of YNHH and YCC. I am grateful for the remarkable support of Mr. and Mrs. Joel Smilow; their transformational gift will impact each and every cancer patient cared for in the new hospital. Following the dedication, we continued the celebration Wednesday evening at Union League Café with many of the donors who gave to the Smilow Cancer Hospital campaign.
The media coverage of the new Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven has brought the excitement to the residents of Connecticut and our surrounding region. We continue to receive wonderful exposure throughout the state and will host FOX News Channel 61 for interviews today and again on Monday morning at 6 AM.

Smilow Update
The lower level and first floor of the new cancer hospital are now finished. Patients are currently scheduled for appointments in the radiation oncology suite and will soon be cared for in the new Breast Center on the first floor of the building. Construction continues on the upper levels. The PET scan machines are scheduled for delivery in the coming weeks in preparation for the opening of the diagnostic imaging area in December.
Outside, the final preparations in the healing garden are underway. The benches have been installed and a sun shade trellis is under construction in the corner of the garden. The signage is installed on the facade of the building facing the route 34 connector on one side and downtown New Haven on another, and on the entrance to the building.

Shared Resource Highlight
Pathology Tissue Services
(formerly Critical Technologies for Tissue Services)
Yale Pathology Tissue Services (YPTS) features the following modules: Tissue Procurement and Banking, Research Histology, Tissue Microarray, and Tissue Analysis.
The mission of Yale Pathology Tissue Services is to maximize the distribution of human tissue for research in the context of optimal patient care and safety. The facility has four divisions:
Tissue Procurement and Banking (TPB)
The TPB division of YPTS provides fresh tissue or frozen tissue in accordance with approved standard operating procedures. Tissues from many sources are procured prospectively. There is also a frozen tissue bank with about 5000 tissue samples. All materials are catalogued using the CaTissue software.
Research Histology
The Research Histology division of YPTS provides complete histology services including paraffin embedding and sectioning, frozen sections, routine and special stains, immunostaining, glycomethacrylate plastic services, development of optimized protocols for staining with non-commercial antibodies, antigen recovery techniques, custom fixation, and embedding protocols. The service also provides digital imaging services on the Bioimagene platform and is exploring offering AQUA-based quantitative immunofluorescent analysis services.
Tissue Microarray
The Tissue Microarray division of YPTS produces and analyzes tissue microarrays. This facility enables researchers to analyze several hundred formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue samples within a single paraffin block, providing highly efficient and standardized evaluation and assessment of the samples. Tissue microarrays are in stock or can be made to order.
Tissue Analysis
This core assesses ploidy and cell cycle analysis; immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization; Southern, Western, Northern blotting; PCR, RT-PCR, and quantitative PCR; SSCP; LOH; microsatellite analysis; yeast functional assay of p53; determination of clonality; and detection of circulating tumor cells.
