The Ocular Oncology Program at Smilow Cancer Hospital is a national referral center in the state of Connecticut for adult and pediatric patients with benign and malignant tumors of the eye, the eyelids, and the orbit. It is one of only a few centers in the nation dedicated full-time to ocular oncology in a cancer hospital. The Ocular Oncology Program at Smilow interacts regularly with other specialties including melanoma, breast cancer, neuro-oncology, radiation oncology, pediatric oncology and lung cancer.
Dr. Renelle Lim, Director of the Program, is an expert in the treatment of uveal melanoma, eyelid and orbital tumors, eyelid reconstruction, and eyelid malposition. She treats all disorders involving cancer in the eye and periocular region, as well as functional and cosmetic plastic surgery.
The Ocular Oncology Program uses state-of-the-art technology to provide cutting-edge treatments to patients using the newest techniques, including delivering chemotherapy and radiotherapy directly to the affected area with minimal side effects. Dr. Lim partners with a team of medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons, head and neck surgeons, genetic counselors, and other specialists to give patients the advantage of seamless coordination of multidisciplinary care to best treat their disease. Clinical trials are offered to patients with metastatic disease in partnership with Yale Cancer Center, one of only 49 National Cancer Institute designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers.
As most cancers of the eye and orbit are rare, treatment at a center with extensive expertise and experience is important. Our ocular oncology team is dedicated to individualized, integrated and holistic care of each patient.
