Monique T. Cano, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry, has been awarded a National Institutes of Health Loan Repayment Program grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism to support her research to develop health-related interventions like exercise and whole health interventions for individuals who experience co-occurring disorders.
Cano’s current project, for which data collection is underway, is titled, “Recovery Enhancement through Active Choices and Habits (REACH)” which was the focus of the loan repayment application.
The project explores individual and sociocultural factors that influence alcohol treatment engagement, examines exercise as a potential intervention for individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD), and gathers insights from community stakeholders — health professionals working with AUD populations — on both treatment engagement and the role of exercise as a supplemental approach to reducing alcohol use.
Lisa Fucito, PhD, associate professor of psychiatry, is Cano’s award mentor.
