Biography

I am an expert in multiple lifestyle behaviors that contribute to the development of chronic diseases and frequently co-occur with mental health conditions including tobacco use, heavy drinking, deficient sleep, and physical inactivity. My research focuses on better understanding these behaviors and their co-occurrence in order to develop innovative interventions to improve people's lives. I am interested in how technology (e.g., smartphones, biosensors, social media, electronic health records) can increase the reach and effectiveness of interventions and improve health outcomes across behaviors. I utilize various research designs and methods to answer these questions including clinical trials, qualitative studies, laboratory-analogue models, daily experience sampling/biosensors, and implementation and dissemination research. Current studies include: (1) an observational study to characterize the longitudinal variability in heavy drinking and alcohol use disorder risk in young adults using the latest innovations in web-based neuropsychological assessment, smartphone sensing technology, and machine learning and statistical modeling (n=350); (2) a RCT of a personalized sleep/ cardiovascular wellness feedback intervention using PPG biosensors and smartphone diaries for young adults who drink heavily (n=60); (3) implementation of a sustainable tobacco treatment model for patients treated across the statewide Yale Cancer Center care network via electronic health record tools, proactive outreach, and pharmacist-led care; (4) a preliminary RCT of oral nicotine pouches on cigarette smoking behavior in adults who smoke (N=30); (5) a RCT of a mobile smoking cessation intervention for patients attending lung cancer screening (N=367); and (6) a RCT of financial incentives plus standard care for promoting smoking cessation among patients undergoing surgery for cancer (N=282). I also direct the Tobacco Treatment Service at Smilow Cancer Hospital and teach/mentor graduate students, residents, and fellows in addiction, behavioral medicine, and clinical research.
