- 00:00I'm Kevin billingslea.
- 00:01I'm the Chief Medical officer of the Smilow
- 00:04Cancer Hospital in the Yale Cancer Center,
- 00:07and I'm also a professor of surgical
- 00:10oncology in the Yale School of Medicine.
- 00:13My specialty is the multidisciplinary
- 00:15treatment in the surgical treatment
- 00:17of patients with tumors of the liver,
- 00:20pancreas, bile ducts,
- 00:21and other gastrointestinal organs.
- 00:23I have wanted to be a physician
- 00:26since I was a youngster and as
- 00:29my interest in medicine grew,
- 00:31I learn more and more about surgery
- 00:34in particularly cancer surgery,
- 00:36in the opportunity to make a
- 00:38really meaningful impact on peoples
- 00:41lives in a positive way.
- 00:43And an impact that could be
- 00:45experienced immediately was
- 00:47very appealing to me years ago,
- 00:49and it continues to be enormously
- 00:51rewarding to this day caring for
- 00:54cancer patients is not just a job,
- 00:57it's a calling.
- 00:58And I find that the biggest thing
- 01:00that draws me to caring for patients
- 01:03is the relationships I have with
- 01:06my patients and their families.
- 01:08I have the privilege of spending,
- 01:10really.
- 01:11Difficult but rewarding times with
- 01:14patients and families during a
- 01:17period of life that is difficult but
- 01:20meaningful and it is gratifying to
- 01:23work with people and help guide them
- 01:26through these these difficult times.
- 01:28I'm fortunate to work in a Cancer Center
- 01:31where we have outstanding clinicians,
- 01:35nurses, technicians,
- 01:36pharmacists and an entire
- 01:38multidisciplinary team that comes
- 01:40together to work on your behalf.
- 01:42Know that I am going to use
- 01:45all of my technical,
- 01:47medical and administrative skill
- 01:49to help you heal and recover.
- 01:52Bringing a family member or a partner
- 01:55or a support person is absolutely an
- 01:58essential part of the healing process.
- 02:01None of us should be going through
- 02:04cancer care alone and I will say
- 02:07that the emotional and psychosocial
- 02:10piece of our Wellness in our
- 02:13journey towards recovery really
- 02:15relies on us creating a sense of
- 02:18connection and community.
- 02:19And we try to do that here at Smilow.
- 02:23But we also very much encourage patients
- 02:27to engage friends and family and and
- 02:31cultivate their their network of support.
- 02:34My research interests really focus on
- 02:36clinical research and the ways that we
- 02:40optimize systems to deliver the best
- 02:43multidisciplinary care to cancer patients,
- 02:45particularly patients with
- 02:46gastrointestinal cancer.
- 02:47I do that through participating in
- 02:50clinical trials through outcome studies,
- 02:52as well as work we're doing right here
- 02:56at smilow in the Yale Cancer Center.
- 02:59To optimize our processes of care delivery.
- 03:03It is an honor and a privilege
- 03:05for me to care for patients.
- 03:08Here I am.
- 03:10Fortunate to be surrounded by an absolutely
- 03:13outstanding group of clinical partners,
- 03:17including our nurses,
- 03:19pharmacists and technicians.
