What inspires you to work in endoscopy?
The ability to improve the course of pancreas disorders can be very satisfying. With technologic advancements we are able to obtain detailed diagnostic imaging and biopsy of the pancreas via endosocopic ultrasound (EUS). This utilizes an endoscope with an ultrasound probe at the tip, and imaging of the pancreas is performed from inside the stomach.
Therapy to relieve blockages of the bile duct, pancreas duct and small bowel can be performed via ERCP and the placement of stents through the scope.
How has treatment improved for patients with pancreatic cancer in recent years? Any new advancements in early detection or extending overall survival?
It is very satisfying to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, along with surgeons, radiologists, pathologists and oncologists with expertise in pancreas cancer, to improve outcomes for patients with pancreas cancer. Advancements in using a combination of chemotherapeutic agents has led to improvements in survival.
In collaborative efforts with genetic experts, we are able to identify high risk patients who may benefit from pancreas cancer screening to aid in early detection.
